An interesting blog. I was drawn by googling for an image of "The Gotha Lovers". The work by Albrecht Duerer which is here labelled "Three Witches" is usually called "Four Witches". But it does take its composition from "The Three Graces", which dates back to classical times. There is a mural of them at Pompeii. Duerer has added a lesser fourth figure. There is a similar arrangement in Pontormo's "The Visitation" with figures of Mary and Elizabeth (Mary's cousin, and mother of John the Baptist) and their maids. I call these works "Douglas Adams trios" after the trilogy (with four or five books) of "A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". The use of three balanced against the one was a classical painting arrangement. David uses it in "The Oath of the Horatii", where the four male figures, the three brothers and their father, are of like mind, but are compositionally opposed. Pierre-Nacisse Guerin's "Aeneas telling Dido of the Woes of Troy" and Jean-Baptiste Greuze's "Septimius Severus Reprimanding His Son Caracalla" (Greuze's actual title is much longer) both use a couch to form two groups of figures, one with a single figure, the other with a group of three. In the cycle of legends around the fall of Troy the archer Philoctetes is needed to bring about the fall. He fells Paris with four arrows. The first misses, the second grazes Paris, the third takes out Paris' right eye, and the fourth finally does him in. Similarly in Irish myth the healer Miach is killed by four blows from his father (who is jealous of Miach's ability) - the first grazes Miach's scalp, the second cuts to the bone, the third cuts into the brain, and the fourth, the one that finally kills, cuts the brain in half.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about the title it is the four witches, thanks for pointing that out to me,it was a slip of the pen.Thank you for the interesting comment.
